Bandura theories social cognition Essay

Albert Bandura`s social learning theory places learning in a social context. Bandura and his colleagues take the position that personality is acquired, or learned behavior. In particular, Bandura`s insistence that behavior can be learned from mere observation is a significant departure from Skinner’s behaviorist position. An original empirical demonstration of observational learning was presented in a study by Bandura, Ross, and Ross (1993). Nursery school children were allowed to watch an adult’s unusual aggressive actions against an inflated Bobo doll – the kind that pops back up after it has been punched or knocked down. The adult models hit the doll with a hammer and kicked it, tossed it in the air, and even sat on it and punched it. After merely observing this behavior, the children were later allowed to play with toys that included the Bobo doll and hammer. The children who observed the adult model, either live or on videotape, hit the doll more frequently than a control group who had not seen a model. They also tended to hit the doll the way they had observed the adult model do it. Bandura interpreted this study as demonstrating that the probability of behavior can be strengthened through observation. Indeed, in Bandura`s approach to personality, much of one’s behavior is learned and strengthened through imitation, which is a kind of social cognition learning. In this term paper I address the difference in the effectiveness of using simulation intervention program based on a Bandura`s Social learning theory. Moreover, to find out if the program improves either or both the quality and speed of the learning process of students enrolled in a highly technical training program. This term paper focuses on using simulation based learning environments in vocational training program. In this paper, the experimental methodology and instruments are described, results and findings presented and finally discussed and concluded. METHODOLOGY Doing my research on Bandura`s Social learning theory in complex simulation-based learning environments, I experienced a large difference in how learners reacted to my learning material (Kluge, in press, 2004). Complex technical simulations involve the placement of the learner into a realistic computer simulated situation or technical scenario which puts control back into the learner’s hands. The contextual content of simulations allows the learner to â€Å"learn by doing. † Although my primary purpose was in improving research methods and testing procedures for evaluating learning results of simulation-based learning, the different reaction of the participants were so obvious that I took a closer look. I had two different groups participating in my learning experiments: students from an engineering department at the University, mostly in their 3rd semester, and apprentices from vocational training programs in mechanics and electronics of several companies near the University area in their 3rd year of vocational training. Most of the students worked very intensively and concentrated on solving these complex simulation tasks whereas apprentices became easily frustrated and bored. Purposes of the Study Although my first research purpose was not in investigating the differences between these groups, colleagues and practitioners showed their interest and encouraged me to look especially at that difference. Practitioners especially hoped to find explanations why apprentices sometimes are less enthusiastic about simulation learning although it is said to be motivating for their perception. As mentioned above, my primary purpose when I started to investigate learning and simulation based on Bandura`s Social Cognition theories was focused on improving the research methodology and test material (see Kluge, in press, 2004) for experimenting with simulation-based learning environments. But observing the subjects’ reactions to the learning and testing material the question arose whether there might be a difference in the quality of and speed of the learning process of students involved in my study. Research Design A 3-factor 2 ? 2 ? 2 factorial control-group-design was performed (factor 1: â€Å"Simulation complexity†: ColorSim 5 vs ColorSim 7; factor 2: â€Å"support method†: GES vs. DI-GES; factor 3: target group, see Table 2). Two hundred and fifteen mostly male students (16% female) in eight groups (separated into four experimental and four control groups) participated in the main study. The control group served as a treatment check for the learning phase and to demonstrate whether subjects acquired any knowledge within the learning-phase. While the experimental groups filled in the knowledge test at the end of the experiment (after the learning and the transfer tasks), the control groups filled in the knowledge test directly after the learning phase. I did not want to give the knowledge test to the experimental group after the learning phase because of its sensitivity to testing-effects. I assumed that learners who did not acquire the relevant knowledge in the learning phase could acquire useful knowledge by taking the knowledge test, which could have led to a better transfer performance which is not due to the learning method but caused by learning from taking the knowledge test. The procedure subjects had to follow included a learning phase in which they explored the structure of the simulation aiming at knowledge acquisition. After the learning phase, subjects first had to fill in the four-item questionnaire on self-efficacy before they performed 18 transfer tasks. The transfer tasks were separated into two blocks (consisting of nine control tasks each) by a 30-minute break. In four experimental groups (EG), 117 students and apprentices performed the learning phase (28 female participants), the 18 control tasks and the knowledge test. As said before, the knowledge test was applied at the end because of its sensitivity to additional learning effects caused by filling in the knowledge test. In four control groups (CG), 98 students and apprentices performed the knowledge test directly after the learning phase, without working on the transfer task (four female participants). The EGs took about 2-2. 5 hours and the CG about 1. 5 hours to finish the experiment. Both groups (EGs and CGs) were asked to take notes during the learning phase. Subjects were randomly assigned to the EGs and CGs, nonetheless ensuring that the same number of students and apprentices were in each group.

Building ethics is a learning process; the things one learns, as one grows, will govern and guide the rest of one’s life. Ethics are important to today’s society. Individuals tend to face stressful situations by ignoring ethics and doing their own thing. This is why ethics play a significant role in communication. Ethical communication encompasses one being honest in all communications; keeping an honest and open opinions towards others. In some business situations, ethical communication involves keeping confidential information confidential, and not discussing personal business. In the more public the position, there is a greater need for ethical principles. Ethical communication help promote access to opportunities necessary to fulfill human potential; to help contribute to business, families, communities, and society in general. Ethical communications promote caring climates and mutual understandings that respect the unique needs and characteristics of every individual. It is being committed to courageous expression of personal convictions to pursuit fairness and justice. There are various forms of ethical decision-making processes. There is Aristotle’s  Mean, Confucius’s Golden Mean, Kant’s Categorical Imperative, Islam’s Divine Command, Mill’s Principl e of Utility, Rawls’s Veil of Ignorance, and Judeo-Christian Persons and Ends. A few personal favorites, Aristotle’s, Confucius’, and Mill’s process of thinking. Aristotle’s ethics fits deduces facts about the nature of the world and the nature of man by the use of reason. Aristotle’s ethics are an example of virtue ethics. Virtue ethics concentrates on the worth of the moral agent and not the consequences of his or her actions; â€Å"good cannot be identical for all men† (Learning activity- transcript ethics: what is right?, 2012). Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. Confucius’s Golden Mean is a golden rule; do not do to others what you do not wish for yourself. Mill’s process of thinking; â€Å"Mill believed that every individual has sovereignty over his or her own body, psyche and spirit† (Learning activity- transcript ethics: what is right?, 2012). Mill followed more of a utilitarianism method which proposed that this principle should be used mainly in determining the value of rules such as do not kill, do not lie, do not steal, and so forth. The ethic process that I bleive to be better is John Stuart Mill’s. I choose Mill’s, because Mill believes that we as people have control over our actions and within our conscience minds, we know right from wrong. Mill’s Principle of Utility is the easiest for a majority of people to follow. It leads to morally sound decisions, handling moral dilemmas, and helps to make effective moral decisions. â€Å"The principle of utility determines the rightness of acts (or rules of action) by their effect on the total happiness† (Learning activity- transcript ethics: what is right?, 2012). For example, within everything one does decisions have to be made. Morally we know what it is right and wrong, because many individuals are brought up that way. In a business environment, every individual is personally responsible for themselves, for being honest, and respectful. As a worker, I follow not only my ethics but those of the company. â€Å"All of our directors, officers and associates must conduct themselves accordingly and seek to avoid even the appearance of improper behavior† (Code of business conduct and ethics, 2015). For example, answering the phone we are to be polite and respectful throughout the entire phone call. Customers will call to ask questions if we have a certain product in stock or the product at all. I answered the phone and was asked  if there were any karaoke radios in stock. I turned to my co-worker to ask her, she replied â€Å"Just tell them no.† I was shocked at her response. Instead of telling the customer no, I put them on hold and searched myself. I knew in my conscience mind it would be wrong for me not too. I would rather speak the truth (John Stuart Mills Utility) and avoid a communication dispute later. Ethics and morals are crucial concepts in today’s world. Ethics are rules and standards governing the conduct in which one lives and makes life decisions. Ethics build traits that help shape an individual beliefs and help shape and understanding of right and wrong. Every day one’s ethics are challenged by work, school, home, and most importantly communication. It is important to understand how to react to a particular situation long before that situation happens. In recent years there has been the recognition that animals rarely serve as good models for the human body. Animal experiments prolong the suffering of people waiting for effective cures by misleading experimenters and squandering precious money, time, and resources that could have been spent on human-relevant research. â€Å"In the name of science†, animal experiments globally are around 100 million experiments each year. Cats, dogs, rabbits, mice and other animals, no different to those we have as pets, are used in experiments. Animals are force-fed harmful substances, infected with lethal viruses, subjected to brain damage, heart attacks, stokes, cancers and ultimately killed. Several cosmetic tests commonly performed on mice, rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs include:skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed on shaved skin or dripped into the eyes without any pain relief. repeated force-feeding studies that last weeks or months, to look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards. widely condemned â€Å"lethal dose† tests, where animals are forced to swallow large amounts of a test chemical to determine what dose causes death. The fact that animals can suffer and experience pain is sufficient reason to refrain on moral grounds from harming them. Beyond pain, there is also persuasive evidence that animals, in particular mammals and birds, have thoughts, intentions, and memories. This means they can be harmed by confinement, frustration, fear, isolation, and loss of life – experiences unavoidable for animals confined in Laboratories and used in experiments. The measurement of stress hormones, and presence of ulcers, immune suppression, abnormal behavior and brain dysfunction in laboratory animals, provide further evidence that animals commonly used in labs do suffer pain and distress. Some people claim that because animals do not have duties or responsibilities in the way humans do, they are not deserving of the same protection. However, some humans have no responsibilities or duties, such as babies, the mentally ill, or very infirm, yet they are not stripped of their rights in this way. Indeed, such individuals are usually considered more deserving of protection, not less. Others argue that the potential benefit to human society justifies experiments on animals. However this argument is a slippery slope, as this reasoning would also justify experiments on a few non-consenting humans for the ultimate benefit of human society — a clearly unethical scenario. â€Å"If we didn’t use animals, we’d have to test new drugs on people. † The fact is that we already do test new drugs on people. No matter how many animal tests are undertaken, someone will always be the first human to be tested on. Because animal tests are so unreliable, they make those human trials all the more risky. What I have to wonder is why do we test on animals, or feel the need to have people volunteer for something potential dangerous with its unknown side effects when we have child molesters, rapists, and murderers in prison who are catered to three meals a day? I believe we should enact instead of animal testing, (which has been proven to be highly ineffective) testing on convicted criminals on death row, or prisoners looking to cut down some time in exchange for experimentation and observation.
